7-20-11: More great news for Andrew Moon (PhD, 2010)! Not only has he won the MU Distinguished Dissertation Award for 2010-2011, but he's also had a second paper accepted for publication by Mind, one of the handful of top philosophy journals in the world.

5-27-11: Great news on job placement! Crystal Allen (ABD) has accepted an indefinitely renewable assistant professorship at Principia College (to begin in Fall 2012); Joel Dittmer (PhD, 2010) has accepted a tenure-track position at Missouri University of Science and Technology; Mat Konieczka (PhD, 2007) has accepted a tenure-track position at Newbury College; and Melanie Johnson-Moxley (PhD, 2008) will be a visiting assistant professor next year at Columbia College.

3-3-11: Andrew Moon (PhD, 2010) and Justin McBrayer (PhD, 2008) are two of 15 recent PhDs and ABD graduate students from the US and Canada who have been accepted into the all-expenses-paid, two-week 2011 Purdue Summer Seminar on Perceptual, Moral, and Religious Skepticism. Congratulations to them both!

12-3-10: Bill Bondeson will be retiring at the end of this academic year after 46 years in MU's Philosophy Department! He'd love to hear from former students and colleagues at 109 Lowry Hall or at BondesonW@missouri.edu.

11-12-10: Congratulations to Paul Weirich on his richly deserved appointment as a Curators' Distinguished Professor! The official award was made Wednesday night.

11-1-10: The department is delighted to announce that Chris Pincock (PhD, Berkeley, 2002) will join us next semester as an associate professor of philosophy with tenure. He works chiefly in the intersection of the philosophy of science with the philosophy of mathematics, and will greatly add to our existing strengths in the philosophy science.

7-20-10: Congratulations to Kok Yong Lee won the department's Scott T. Davey Memorial Prize for Excellence in MA Research.

7-1-10: There's an interesting article about Paul Weirich and his work in the latest issue of MU's Illuminations magazine.

6-22-10: Andrew Moon (PhD, 2010) has been awarded a Preparing Future Faculty Mizzou Advantage Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship, made possible by the Chancellor's Fund for Excellence. Congratulations, Andrew!

5-5-10: Marcus Hines has successfully defended his senior thesis, entitled "Two Arguments from Vagueness for Four-Dimensionalism." The thesis examines two recent attempts to show that ordinary objects have temporal as well as spatial parts (are "four-dimensional"). Next year, Hines will begin Ph.D. work in philosophy at Northwestern University. Congratulations, Marcus!

2-2-10: Michael Hartsock (PhD, 2009) has accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.  Great job, Michael!

9-04-09: Congratulations to Paul Weirich on winning MU's 2009 William H. Byler Distinguished Professor Award, which recognizes outstanding abilities, performance, and character!


8-25-09: Congratulations to Rich Foley of the Department of Classical Studies on winning the Journal of the History of Philosophy's annual prize for the best contribution to the Articles section of the Journal with his "Plato's Undividable Line: Contradiction and Method in Republic VI" (Vol. 46: 1-24)!

8-25-09: Congratulations to Robert Johnson on his promotion to professor, and to Claire Horisk on her tenure and promotion to associate professor!

7-9-09: We learned today the extremely sad news that Scott Davey died this evening at 6:45pm in The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.  He had been in intensive care for several weeks. The courage and dignity with which he handled the huge challenges of his health were truly inspirational.


Andrew Moon (ABD) has a paper forthcoming in Mind, and has also won this year's one and only MU Chancellor's Dissertation Fellowship.


Alan Tomhave (PhD, 2008) has accepted a tenure-track position at Youngstown State University, Ohio.


Jared Bates (PhD, 2001) has a paper, "A Defense of the Explanatory Argument for Physicalism", forthcoming in The Philosophical Quarterly.


Justin McBrayer (PhD, 2008) has a paper, "A Limited Defense of Moral Perception," forthcoming in Philosophical Studies.


Mat Konieczka (PhD, 2007) has accepted a three-year renewable position at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire.


Eric Roark (PhD, 2008) has accepted a tenure-track position at Millikan University in Decatur, Illinois.


Troy Nunley (PhD, 2005) has accepted a tenure-track position at Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado.


Lily Chang (PhD, 2006) has published a book, Aristotle on Happiness, with VDM (Verlag Dr. Mueller).


Justin McBrayer (PhD, 2008) has accepted a tenure-track position at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.


The Realistic Standards for Decisions Conference was held on April 25 and 26, 2008.


Edward Moad (PhD, 2003) has published his paper, "Reasons, Resultance, and Moral Particularism", in Philosophical Quarterly (January 2007).


We are delighted to welcome Philip Robbins this semester as associate professor of philosophy; he will greatly add to existing strengths in philosophy of mind and philosophy of language.


Dr Robert Johnson, associate professor of philosophy, has won this year’s MU Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activities.


Melisa McCormick (MA, 2001) has recently been awarded tenure in the Department of Philosophy and Women’s Studies at the College of Southern Nevada.


Ted Poston (PhD, 2005) has a paper forthcoming in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.


Eric Roark, current PhD student, has won the Jean Hampton Prize for 2007, and is the first graduate student ever to do so.

Jason Berntsen (PhD, 2007) has a position as a tenure-track assistant professor at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA.

Ron Novy (PhD, 2007) has a renewable position as a visiting instructor and college adviser at the University of Central Arkansas.


Philip Robbins (AOS Philosophy of Mind/Psychology) will be joining our faculty in the Fall of 2007!


Eric Roark, our Kline Chair research assistant, is the 2007 recipient of the Jean Hampton Memorial Prize awarded to the best paper in social and political philosophy submitted to the Pacific Division of the APA by a philosopher in an early career stage. Eric’s winning paper is entitled, “Is Michael Otsuka's Conception of Robust Self-Ownership Too Robust for a Left-Libertarian?”


Ted Poston, one of our recent PhD’s has been hired, tenure-track, by University of South Alabama.


Matt McGrath is the recipient of the Oxford Studies in Metaphysics Younger Scholar Prize.


The Department has two new Curators' appointments! Bina Gupta is the recipient of a Curators' Dinstinguished Professorship, and Peter Markie has received a Curators' Teaching Professorship. These appointments are the highest recognitions faculty members can receive at the University of Missouri.
